Speed up bit torrent downloads in Vista

On my Vista install, I've noticed that BitTorrent downloads are not as fast as they were for me in XP. From what I can gather, this reduction in speed is due to difference in the AutoTuning function that Vista uses on the TCP/IP stack. The optimizer actually results in slower downloads. This affects BitTorrent and other programs that make use of threaded downloads.

If you are seeing slow downloads in BitTorrent too, you can disable the AutoTuning in Vista, this worked for me. To disable the Autotuning, follow these steps.

1. Click on the Start menu and type cmd in the search box. But DO NOT hit Enter after typing cmd. Instead, hold down the Control and Shift keys, and hit Enter while still holding them down. This opens the command prompt with elevated privileges.

2. In the command prompt, type netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable and then hit enter. It should respond with a line that says Ok.

3. It Windows, so you know naturally need to reboot.

Making this change should speed up your BitTorrent downloads, but if it messes up something else as a result, you can always revert the change by following the same steps but replacing the command in the command prompt with netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

BitTorrent Ports Tip to Speed Up Clients

Increase download speed of a BitTorrent client
Some users of the BitTorrent client report experiencing slow downloads when sharing P2P files. This is most likely to occur on computers behind a home router or software firewall.
Being behind firewalls, the BitTorrent client may block incoming Bit Torrent network connections. Given the load balancing and "swarming" nature of the BitTorrent network, clients unable to take incoming requests for uploads will naturally be allowed less bandwidth for downloads.

To solve this problem, consider the following:

When a user starts a BitTorrent client, the client sets up a network resource called a "port" to allow other Bit Torrent clients to connect ot it.
Each port possesses a unique number called the "TCP port number."

A BitTorrent client normally associates the TCP port number 6881. However, if this port is busy for some reason, the client will instead try successively higher ports (6882, 6883, and so on up to a limit of 6999). In order for outside BitTorrent clients to reach this one, they must be able to connect to the correct port.

When connecting to another BitTorrent client, the requesting client will first try port 6881, then 6882, and so on. However, if the computer is on a firewalled network, the incoming request may not reach these ports. On the other hand, if these requests succeed, the accepting client will be able to download faster.

Firewalls can block nearly all of the ports used by P2P clients. To ensure the BitTorrent ports are made available to requesting clients, a home router or firewall can be manually configured to accept them. Most home routers possess a feature called "Port Range Forwarding" to do this. This feature allows the administer to tell the firewall where traffic for a given port number should be directed.

For BitTorrent, many home users set up port forwarding on the TCP range 6881-6889. These ports must be directed to the computer running the BitTorrent client. If more than one computer on the network may run BitTorrent, a different range such as 6890-6899 or 6990-6999 can be used for each. Remember that BitTorrent uses ports in the 6881-6999 only.

Many people don't realize that Windows XP computers include the built in Windows Firewall. If port forwarding is set up on a home router, but Windows Firewall is running on the BitTorrent client computer, incoming requests may still fail to reach the client. Ensure the Windows Firewall is either disabled or is set up to allow the appropriate BitTorrent ports to pass through. The same recommendation applies to other software firewalls.

On home networks without a router, the software firewall (Windows Firewall, ZoneAlarm, or other) must be set up to provide the equivalent forwarding or pass-through capability as needed

If you are using BitTorrent or a similar P2P file sharing program, you should probably be using PeerGuardian2 to help protect yourself against the RIAA and other anti-P2P organizations. PeerGuardian2 keeps a blacklist of sites that it will not allow connections with, these blacklisted sites being sites known to be anti-P2P organizations that are looking to entrap you. It's obviously not perfect since it's only as good as the list, but it's an extra layer of precaution that is well worth taking. The only down-side is that it does not work on Vista yet, but they claim to be working on it, so check back often.

Using uTorrent on the Mac

uTorrent is a great BitTorrent client that is light weight, configurable, and free. The only problem with it, from the perspective of a Mac user, is that it only runs on Windows machines. Here's how to get uTorrent to run on the Mac (or any unix machine for that matter).

First, you need to install WINE on your Mac, WINE allows non-Windows computers to run windows applications without needing a full-blown windows emulator. The Mac version of this is called Darwine and you can get the latest download here: http://thisismyinter.net/?p=21. Just download, unzip, and move the entire Darwine package into your applications folder. If you are using a flavor of unix, there should be a version of WINE available for you, just google it to find it.

But before you can run WINE on the Mac, you need to install the one dependency that it has, X11. X11 is easily installed, it comes on your OS X Tiger Install Disc (#1). Just put that disc in and find the Optional Installs package and double click on it to start the package manager. Just follow the prompts to the 4th step (Installation Type) and when you get there, make sure you check the box next to X11. After that, it's just following the steps again.

Next you'll need to download the latest version of uTorrent from here: http://www.utorrent.com/download.php. This will save as a windows executable file (.exe). Once the file is downloaded, start Darwine by going to Applications > Darwine > WineHelper.app. Once Darwine is started, select Application and then Open... from the menu bar and then select the downloaded uTorrent executable file. This will start the installation of uTorrent on your Mac.

One of the keys to getting good speed with BitTorrent is to limit your upload speed to 75% of your actual upload speed. There are several key points here. First, you need to determine what your actual upload speed is. Not what the claimed upload speed is from your ISP, but the actual upload speed. Go to a place that can test both upload and download speeds (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ is one) and get the actual numbers. Once you determine your actual upload speed, configure your BitTorrent client so that the max allowed upload speed is 75% of your tested value. This still allows plenty of bandwidth for people to upload. The issue is that when your upload speed approaches its maximum value, this will begin to affect your download speed. But throttling back your upload speed slightly, you will be able to get the full download speed out of your BitTorrent client, and you'll still be able to share files and be a get netizen.

What is BitTorrent ?

This article is about the protocol. For the program called BitTorrent, see BitTorrent (client).
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing (P2P) communications protocol. BitTorrent is a method of distributing large amounts of data widely without the original distributor incurring the entire costs of hardware,hosting and bandwidth resources. Instead, when data is distributed using the BitTorrent protocol, each recipient supplies pieces of the data to newer recipients, reducing the cost and burden on any given individual source, providing redundancy against system problems, and reducing dependence on the original distributor.
The protocol is the brain child of programmer Bram Cohen, who designed it in April 2001 and released a first implementation on 2 July 2001. It is now maintained by Cohen's company BitTorrent, Inc.[1]

Usage of the protocol accounts for significant traffic on the Internet, but the precise amount has proven difficult to measure.

There are numerous compatible BitTorrent clients, written in a variety of programming languages, and running on a variety of computing platforms.

A BitTorrent client is any program which implements the BitTorrent protocol. Each client is capable of preparing, requesting, and transmitting any type of computer file over a network, using the protocol. A peer is any computer running an instance of a client.

To share a file or group of files, a peer first creates a "torrent." This is a small file which contains metadata about the files to be shared, and about the tracker, the computer that coordinates the file distribution. Peers that want to download the file first obtain a torrent file for it, and connect to the specified tracker which tells them from which other peers to download the pieces of the file.

Though both ultimately transfer files over a network, a BitTorrent download differs from a classic full-file HTTP request in several fundamental ways:

BitTorrent makes many small P2P requests over different TCP sockets, while web-browsers typically make a single HTTP GET request over a single TCP socket.
BitTorrent downloads in a random or "rarest-first" approach that ensures high availability, while HTTP downloads in a contiguous manner.

BitTorrent 4.0.4 running under Windows XPTaken together, BitTorrent achieves much lower cost, much higher redundancy, and much greater resistance to abuse or "flash crowds" than a regular HTTP server. However, this protection comes at a cost: downloads take time to ramp up to full speed because these many peer connections take time to establish, and it takes time for a node to get sufficient data to become an effective uploader. As such, a typical BitTorrent download will gradually ramp up to very high speeds, and then slowly ramp back down toward the end of the download. This contrasts with an HTTP server that, while more vulnerable to overload and abuse, ramps up to full speed very quickly and maintains this speed throughout.

In general, BitTorrent's non-contiguous download methods prevented it from supporting "progressive downloads" or "streaming playback". But recent comments by Bram Cohen and new developments by Red Swoosh suggest that streaming torrent downloads will soon be commonplace.

uTorrent implements many of the features introduced by much larger clients, but uTorrent retains a very small memory footprint. uTorrent's typical memory usage is less than 6 MB, and the CPU use is low enough for most older systems (as low as 486) to run it. uTorrent is one of the most popular BiTorrent clients for PC users.

uTorrent (pronounced as 'micro-torrent', 'you-torrent' or 'mu-torrent') is a BitTorrent client for Microsoft Windows. uTorrent is included in a single 130 KiB (as of January 2006) executable. It was designed to use as little of the computer's resources as possible while offering a lot of the functionality expected from 'full-featured' clients, such as Azureus and BitComet.

Micro-Sized Yet Feature Filled - Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0, and now BitComet 0.63) and peer exchange.

Resource-Friendly - µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all. Additionally, the program itself is contained within a single executable less than 160 KB in size.

Skinnable and Localized - Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. Actively Developed and Improved - The developer puts in a lot of time working on features and making things more user-friendly. Releases only come out when they're ready, with no schedule pressures, so the few bugs that appear are quickly addressed and fixed.

BitTorrent is the name of a client application for the torrent peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocool. created by programmer Bram Cohen. BitTorrent is designed to widely distribute large amounts of data without incurring the corresponding consumption in server and bandwidth resources.

BitTorrent - The bittorrent protocol breaks the file(s) down into smaller fragments, typically a quarter of a megabyte (256KB) in size. Peers download missing fragments from each other and upload those that they already have to peers that request them. The protocol is 'smart' enough to choose the peer with the best network connections for the fragments that it's requesting. To increase the overall efficiency of the swarm (the ad-hoc P2P network temporarily created to distribute a particular file), the bittorrent clients request from their peers the fragments that are most rare; in other words, the fragments that are available on the least number of peers, making most fragments available widely across many machines and avoiding bottlenecks. The file fragments are not usually downloaded in sequential order and need to be reassembled by the receiving machine. It is important to note that clients start uploading fragments to their peers before the entire file is downloaded. What are seeders, peers, and leechers?

Seeder
A seeder is someone who has the full file and is still sharing. Users are encouraged to do this whenever possible. Peers are those who are downloading a file but have not yet finished.

Leecher
Leechers are generally people who download lots of stuff but do not share (thus missing part of the point of file sharing). For BT, usually a leecher is someone who closes their client within minutes after the download is complete. This is frowned upon by most other users. Some trackers actively kick people who have bad enough upload to download ratios. Sometimes people use the word leecher when they mean peer.

In contrast to other file-transfer protocols, BitTorrent is designed to work better as the number of people interested in a certain file increases. BitTorrent was started by Bram Cohen, who developed the foundations of BitTorrent whilst studying effective and efficient distribution of data.

There are several choices here, because unlike some peer to peer applications (such as Kazaa), the BitTorrent implementation is open source. This means that programmers are free to take the source code to the program and modify it, if they feel there is something they'd like to change. Here are the various clients of which I am aware:

Microsoft Windows
The Shad0w's experimental client - Recommended! This client incorporates the codebase of the official version as well as all the improvements of the experimental version, below. Additionally, there are some misc. bug fixes, improvements from the latest development CVS sources, a user preferences feature that remembers its settings, and more. I highly recommend this version! (alternate) (alternate 2)
burst! - Recommended! This client features a smaller memory footprint compared to the others, due to replacing the wxPython GUI with one written in Delphi. The GUI lets you control multiple transfers from a single window, in addition to many other handy features such as a built-in TorrentSpy-like capability. It uses the same Python back-end as The Shad0w's client so you also get all of the recent developments included therein.
burst plus! - A client which is based on the burst base and includes Spanish language support, as well as some other additions.
SimpleBT - Another fork of the burst code base that features Chinese language support.
ABC ("Another BitTorrent Client") - This is a relatively new client that includes many of the most recent changes in the experimental versions, as well as other added features such as controling multiple downloads from a single window, queueing, automatic seeding, etc. See also: Sourceforge page.
Official client - This is the "official" client in that it is the latest supported version from Bram Cohen, architect of BitTorrent. It has the fewest features of all the clients, and releases are much more conservative than the experimental versions. Use this if you want stability but don't need any of the common features of the other clients, such as upload rate limiting. See also: (CVS view), Sourceforge page.
Eike Frost's Experimental client - This is based on the official version, with patches to allow upload rate control and show statistics about the number of peers and seeds, among other things. New in the "-2" revision is support for displaying additional details about the peers that are connected, as well as some annoyance and bug fixes.
Azureus - A very nice Java client that incorporates a full-featured GUI with extensive visualizations/statistics about the transfer. You will need the 1.4 JRE installed to run this, which can be obtained from this link. See also: Screen shots.
Personal Torrent Collector (PTC) - This is an alternative GUI interface to the Python BitTorrent client. It has support for a number of interesting features, such as the ability to control the total bandwidth usage of a group of BitTorrent transfers, and RSS syndication for organizing torrent files. Shareaza - Newer public beta versions of this program now include BitTorrent support, in addition to the eDonkey2k and Gnutella protocols. However, the BitTorrent support may still have bugs, and some things (such as seeding a file) may not be as straightforward as with dedicated BitTorrent clients.
NovaTorrent - I welcome reviews of this client. :-) I have not personally evaluated it yet.
BitTorrent++ - This is an alternative to the official client. It supports extra functionality such as multiple downloads from a single GUI. Some people (myself included) have experienced major bugs with this program, so consider it unstable and use a different client unless you want to experiment. It appears to be abandoned and has not had any bug fixes in a long time. Therefore, since these bugs have the ability to adversely affect the performance of the BitTorrent swarm, so pleae do not use this client.
Mac OS X
Official client v3.2.2a - This is the newest build of the client for OS X 10.2 (Jaguar.) It incorporates adjustments for upload rate control, as well as preferences for min/max port. Also included are some statistics (number of peers, total uploaded/downloaded) and support for Rendezvous (ability to find peers on the same side of the firewall and allow trackerless operation in the local domain.) Note: If you get the error message Download failed when you try to open a torrent with this version, try the following fix. Note: Apparently the new 3.2.2a version linked above fixes this glitch.)
Move all installed copies/versions of bittorrent to the trash.
Empty the trash.
Open the BitTorrent_OSX_3.2.2a.dmg file again and copy the bittorrent program directly into the Applications folder.
Official client v3.1 - Try this previous version of the client if you have difficulties with 3.2.2.
3.1 client with rate limiting patch - I have no additional details about this version.

Additionally, you should be able to run any of the various Python/wxPython based clients directly from the source code, but it may take a little bit of work. Here are the steps you should follow. Note, I am not a Mac user so I can't guarantee this will work, if someone could do it and send me the exact instructions, I'll post it here.

Install Python. If you are running 10.2, download this bundle of Python 2.3a3 (see also: Home Page.) If you are running 10.1, there is a pre-packaged version here &emdash; please read the instructions on the home page, note that you cannot use stuffit with this archive. If you want more information on Python and Macs, try this link.
Install wxPython. For 10.2 and Python 2.3, use this package (2.4.0.7). If you don't have Python 2.3, you may have to use a previous version, such as this one (2.4.0.2). This page at Sourceforge contains the latest as well as several previous versions.
Install the source code for the BitTorrent client. The above section for Windows clients has links to source code.
To start the GUI client, run "python btdownloadgui.py --responsefile file.torrent", where file.torrent is the torrent file which you have already downloaded. See also the section below on using the BitTorrent command line tools. Also, the command-line version of Python should be in your path for this to work. See this page for instructions on adding /usr/local/bin to your path.
Max OS 9
There is no official support for Mac OS 9. Further, wxPython does not seem to be ported to Mac OS 9, which means you cannot run the GUI versions. However, there is hope: you can still use BitTorrent, although it will take a little bit of extra work.

Download and install MacPython. Please refer to this page for more information on Python and Macs.
Download and unpack the source code to the client.
Option-Drag the file btdownloadheadless.py from the source code to PythonInterpreter. Then click Set unix-like command line interpreter, and enter "--url http://server/file.torrent", except substitute the actual URL of the .torrent file. This is the same as the "download" link on whatever web page offered the torrent. Select Go and the file should begin downloading. If you get an error message that ends in ImportError: cannot import name getpid, use the following procedure:

Find the file download.py from the source code (it's in the subfolder named BitTorrent) and open it with any plain-text editor.
Search near line 23 for the following:

from os import getpid, path, makedirs

And remove the getpid word so that the line now reads:

from os import path, makedirs
Search near line 177 for the following:

myid = (chr(0) * 12) + sha(repr(time()) + ' ' + str(getpid())).digest()[-8:]

and change it to the following:

Save the file, and retry the above procedure for downloading, hopefully this time without the error message.
Linux/Unix
Most of the clients that are pure Python/wxPython (e.g. the official BitTorrent client, Eike Frost's experimental, Shad0w's experimental) will run under *BSD/Linux without problems. The source code tarballs for all of these clients are available at the home pages; see the links above. Clients written in other cross-platform languages such as Java (e.g. Azureus) should also work.

The biggest challenge to running a BT client under *BSD/Linux is getting the required libraries installed. At a minimum you will need Python 2.2 or greater. If you want to use the '-gui' versions of the clients you will also need wxWindows, which has Python bindings called wxPython. These should all be available as packages for your system. Your first step should be to consult your distribution's package system and get these prerequisites installed.

For Debian systems there is a package called bittorrent, which requires the python 2.2 package. You should also install the packages libwxgtk2.4-python and mime-support, if you plan to use the GUI version of the client.

If you are using Mandrake with Cooker, you might want to try the RPMs listed here.

Below are some general instructions for installing on a Unix/Linux system.

Install Python, preferably version 2.2. You can run "python -V" to see what version you currently have installed, if any. Also, you may have multiple versions of Python installed, so you might check /usr/bin for commands like python2.2 if plain python says it's version 1.x. If your distribution uses packages, use the search tool to find prepackaged versions before trying to manually install. Try here and here for Python RPMs.

Install wxPython if you want to use the GUI version. Note that this will require the GLib and GTK+ libraries, which are probably already on your system if you have GNOME installed. (Start here or search your distribution's package manager if you need GTK+.) You'll want to find the wxPython package corresponding to the version of Python which you have installed. For RPM systems such as RedHat and Mandrake, you might try the following wxPython RPMs corresponding to version 2.1, version 2.2, and version 2.3 of Python. More RPMs are available at the Sourceforge site, and you can also consult the wxPython download page. Please be aware that the RPMs linked above assume that Python is installed under /usr and that the Python libs are in /usr/lib/python2.x/. If this is not the case, you will probably need to tell the installer this information.

Finally, install the source tarball for the BT client to a directory of your choice. To integrate the client with your web browser, it will be necessary to associate files of type "application/x-bittorrent" with the BitTorrent client. You will need to add a line such as the following to your /etc/mailcap file:

application/x-bittorrent; /usr/local/bin/btdownloadgui.py --responsefile %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"

Note that you should substitute the correct path for the location in which you installed the source tarball. If don't have wxPython or would prefer to use one of the text-mode clients you can replace btdownloadgui.py with btdownloadcurses.py or btdownloadheadless.py. Also note there's an error in the INSTALL.unix.txt file, which is missing the --responsefile argument.

Other web browsers may have a different way of associating a command with a MIME-Type, so you may want to try looking at the preferences or init file for details.

Java Clients (platform independent)
Azureus - A full-featured Java BitTorrent client with many enhancements and features.
snark 0.4 - Snark is an implementation of BitTorrent protocol that uses gcj, the GNU Compiler for Java. In addition to acting as a regular client, Snark also includes an integrated .torrent file creator, micro-HTTPd server, and tracker. With Snark the user can share files with a single command, without the usual hassle of installing a tracker, finding a web server, posting the .torrent file, etc. Compilation requires gcj 3.3 or higher; alternatively you can find a precompiled bytecode version here. Effusion 0.3 - Experimental Java client with IRC integration. See home page for details and usage.
JTorrent 0.1 - This is a line-by-line port of the 3.0.2 python client/tracker to Java. It currently installs and runs under Windows and Unix, and requires the JRE v1.4 or greater. Downloading torrents and sharing files

Users browse the web to find a torrent of interest, download it, and open it with a BitTorrent client. The client connects to the tracker(s) specified in the torrent file, from which it receives a list of peers currently transferring pieces of the file(s) specified in the torrent. The client connects to those peers to obtain the various pieces. Such a group of peers connected to each other to share a torrent is called a swarm. If the swarm contains only the initial seeder, the client connects directly to it and begins to request pieces. As peers enter the swarm, they begin to trade pieces with one another, instead of downloading directly from the seeder.

Clients incorporate mechanisms to optimize their download and upload rates; for example they download pieces in a random order, to increase the opportunity to exchange data, which is only possible if two peers have different pieces of the file.

The effectiveness of this data exchange depends largely on the policies that clients use to determine to whom to send data. Clients may prefer to send data to peers that send data back to them (a tit for tat scheme), which encourages fair trading. But strict policies often result in suboptimal situations, where newly joined peers are unable to receive any data (because they don't have any pieces yet to trade themselves) and two peers with a good connection between them do not exchange data simply because neither of them wants to take the initiative. To counter these effects, the official BitTorrent client program uses a mechanism called “optimistic unchoking,” where the client reserves a portion of its available bandwidth for sending pieces to random peers (not necessarily known-good partners, so called preferred peers), in hopes of discovering even better partners and to ensure that newcomers get a chance to join the swarm.[3]

Creating and publishing torrents

The peer distributing a data file treats it as a number of identically-sized pieces, typically between 64 kB and 1 MB each. A piece size of greater than 512 kB will reduce the size of a torrent file for a very large payload, but is claimed to reduce the efficiency of the protocol [1]. The peer creates a checksum for each piece, using a hashing algorithm, and records it in the torrent file. When another peer later receives that piece, its checksum is compared to the recorded checksum to test that it is error-free.[2] Peers that provide a complete file are called seeders, and the peer providing the initial copy is called the initial seeder.

The exact information contained in the torrent file depends on the version of the BitTorrent protocol. By convention, the name of a torrent file has the suffix .torrent. Torrent files contain an "announce" section, which specifies the URL of the tracker, and an "info" section which contains (suggested) names for the files, their lengths, the piece length used, and a SHA-1 hash code for each piece, which clients should use to verify the integrity of the data they receive.

Completed torrent files are typically published on websites or elsewhere, and registered with a tracker. The tracker maintains lists of the clients currently participating in the torrent.[2] Alternatively, in a trackerless system (decentralized tracking) every peer acts as a tracker. This is implemented by the BitTorrent, µTorrent, BitComet and KTorrent clients through the distributed hash table (DHT) method. Azureus also supports a trackerless method which is incompatible (as of April 2007) with the DHT offered by all other supporting clients.

In November 2006, BitTorrent Inc. introduced its "Publish Torrent" service which creates and hosts a torrent file (seeded from an existing web-hosted media file), and tracks downloads. The service (http://www.bittorrent.com/publish) requires a client which supports web-seeding (currently only the official client, Azureus and μTorrent).
